There is a great quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson that goes, “the only person you are destined to become is…the person you decide to be.” When I was first introduced to vision boards many years ago, I was at a point of my life where I felt stuck. I had been working hard to create a successful life, but still felt as if something was missing, especially in my personal life, and wanted to find a better way to align myself and my future with passion and purpose.
What is a vision board?
A vision board (also known as a dream board) is a collage representing all of the things you would like to attract into your life. It helps put your dreams, goals, and intentions out into the Universe.
Vision boards are a simple, but extremely valuable visualization tool, that is intended to stir up an emotional response, or how you want to feel, whenever you see it. If you have heard of the “Secret” or, “The Law of Attraction” vision boards are a method that fall under this as well because it evokes your subconscious mind, which controls our creativity, our intuition and inspiration. Our subconscious mind mostly recognizes symbols and images, which is another reason why a vision board, something that is visual, is so incredibly powerful!
Loosely stated, a basic principle of, “The Law of Attraction” states that what you focus on both consciously and subconsciously will directly affect what you get in life. This is why you need to keep your vision board somewhere where you’ll see it everyday. For example, I have hung my board on the inside of my closet because I knew I had to open it everyday to pick out something to wear, and it would give me the opportunity to look at it, even if it was just a quick glance before my kids came barreling in through the door, pulling me back to my mommy duties!
How to best organize your vision board
There are no official rules, however I like to keep my board somewhat organized using the “Western Feng Shui” method to ensure that I cover all areas of my life.
|Wealth/ Power/ Prosperity||Fame/ Future/ Reputation||Love/ Relationships/ Marriage|
|Family/ Health/ Community||Well-being/ Balance||Creativity/ Children/ Legacy|
|Knowledge/ Wisdom/ Harmony||Self/ Career/ Work|| Compassion/ Travel/ |
Even though it’s a collage, you want to keep it somewhat orderly so that you don’t bring chaos into your life (we have enough already, right). I also like to leave some blank spaces to fill in as needed. Add whatever is meaningful to you, like pictures from magazines, personal pictures, quotes, words or affirmations. Be as specific as possible. In the “well-being/balance” section which is the center of the board, my advice is to include a symbol of your religion, or an image of whatever helps to make you feel balanced and centered.
This is all great, but how long will it take to manifest the things that I want?
Honestly, there is no set time. I would say not to focus on the “how” but more on what you put on the board. Not everything you put on your board will manifest at the same time. Don’t get discouraged if whatever you put on your board doesn’t appear right away, there will sometimes be things brewing behind the scenes that you’re not aware of, instead notice the little steps and signs that things are happening for you.
